But experts in both countries are clear: Unless he goes to war with Panama, Trump can’t reassert control over a canal the U.S. agreed to cede in the 1970s. Here’s a look at how we got here: It is a man-made waterway that uses a series of locks and reservoirs over 51 miles (82 kilometers) to cut through the middle of Panama and connect the Atlantic and Pacific. It spares ships having to go an additional roughly 7,000 miles (more than 11,000 kilometers) to sail around Cape Horn at South America’s southern tip. The U.S. International Trade Administration says the canal saves American business interests “considerable time and fuel costs” and enables faster delivery of goods, which is “particularly significant for time sensitive cargoes, perishable goods, and industries with just-in-time supply chains.” An effort to establish a canal through Panama led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, who built Egypt’s Suez Canal, began in 1880 but progressed little over nine years before going bankrupt. Malaria, yellow fever and other tropical diseases devastated a workforce already struggling with especially dangerous terrain and harsh working conditions in the jungle, eventually costing more than 20,000 lives, by some estimates. Panama was then a province of Colombia, which refused to ratify a subsequent 1901 treaty licensing U.S. interests to build the canal. Roosevelt responded by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The U.S. also prewrote a constitution that would be ready after Panamanian independence, giving American forces “the right to intervene in any part of Panama, to re-establish public peace and constitutional order.” In part because Colombian troops were unable to traverse harsh jungles, Panama declared an effectively bloodless independence within hours in November 1903. It soon signed a treaty allowing a U.S.-led team to begin construction . Some 5,600 workers died later during the U.S.-led construction project, according to one study. The waterway opened in 1914, but almost immediately some Panamanians began questioning the validity of U.S. control, leading to what became known in the country as the “generational struggle” to take it over. The U.S. abrogated its right to intervene in Panama in the 1930s. By the 1970s, with its administrative costs sharply increasing, Washington spent years negotiating with Panama to cede control of the waterway. The Carter administration worked with the government of Omar Torrijos. The two sides eventually decided that their best chance for ratification was to submit two treaties to the U.S. Senate, the “Permanent Neutrality Treaty” and the “Panama Canal Treaty.” The first, which continues in perpetuity, gives the U.S. the right to act to ensure the canal remains open and secure. The second stated that the U.S. would turn over the canal to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999, and was terminated then. Both were signed in 1977 and ratified the following year. The agreements held even after 1989, when President George H.W. Bush invaded Panama to remove Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega. In the late 1970s, as the handover treaties were being discussed and ratified, polls found that about half of Americans opposed the decision to cede canal control to Panama. However, by the time ownership actually changed in 1999, public opinion had shifted, with about half of Americans in favor. Administration of the canal has been more efficient under Panama than during the U.S. era, with traffic increasing 17% between fiscal years 1999 and 2004 . Panama’s voters approved a 2006 referendum authorizing a major expansion of the canal to accommodate larger modern cargo ships. The expansion took until 2016 and cost more than $5.2 billion. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said in a video Sunday that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to.” He added that, while his country’s people are divided on some key issues, “when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag.” Shipping prices have increased because of droughts last year affecting the canal locks, forcing Panama to drastically cut shipping traffic through the canal and raise rates to use it. Though the rains have mostly returned, Panama says future fee increases might be necessary as it undertakes improvements to accommodate modern shipping needs. Mulino said fees to use the canal are “not set on a whim.” Jorge Luis Quijano, who served as the waterway’s administrator from 2014 to 2019, said all canal users are subject to the same fees, though they vary by ship size and other factors. “I can accept that the canal’s customers may complain about any price increase,” Quijano said. “But that does not give them reason to consider taking it back.” The president-elect says the U.S. is getting “ripped off” and “I’m not going to stand for it.” “It was given to Panama and to the people of Panama, but it has provisions — you’ve got to treat us fairly. And they haven’t treated us fairly,” Trump said of the 1977 treaty that he said “foolishly” gave the canal away. The neutrality treaty does give the U.S. the right to act if the canal’s operation is threatened due to military conflict — but not to reassert control. “There’s no clause of any kind in the neutrality agreement that allows for the taking back of the canal,” Quijano said. “Legally, there’s no way, under normal circumstances, to recover territory that was used previously.” Trump, meanwhile, hasn’t said how he might make good on his threat. “There’s very little wiggle room, absent a second U.S. invasion of Panama, to retake control of the Panama Canal in practical terms,” said Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. Gedan said Trump’s stance is especially baffling given that Mulino is a pro-business conservative who has “made lots of other overtures to show that he would prefer a special relationship with the United States.” He also noted that Panama in recent years has moved closer to China, meaning the U.S. has strategic reasons to keep its relationship with the Central American nation friendly. After multiple cases where roads in Lutyens Delhi caved in due to damage to the British-era sewer lines running underneath, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has proposed an ambitious ₹ 556 crore project to restore the drainage system, officials aware of the matter said. Traffic movement is likely to be affected in New Delhi when the work begins. NDMC officials said that the work will only be taken up on coordination with traffic police to minimise snarls, and trenchless technology will be used to reduce the impact on vehicular movement. NDMC maintains around 350km of sewer lines, which is spread over an area of 42.7 sq km of the New Delhi area — much of which was built between 1920 and 1930. Though only around 250,000 people live here, around 1.75 million people travel to this part of the Capital every day for work. “The council has prepared a comprehensive plan to replace and upgrade the pre-Independence infrastructure, and over the next few years, the rehabilitation work will be taken up at large scale so that the underlying infrastructure in New Delhi can meet the increased demand,” NDMC vice chairperson Kuljeet Chahal said. Officials said that NDMC plans to fund the project — likely to last five years — by using the urban development fund of the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), and that work is likely to start in 2025. “The matter has been taken up with the ministry, and under the project, 17 lines will be covered. The proposal was presented to the project sanctioning committee on July 19. The proposal for hydraulic analysis and the detailed plan have already been processed, and the project is likely to be started in the next financial year,” the official said. NDMC officials said that over the decades, corrosive gases from these sewage lines have damaged the outer layers of the sewer pipes. “This leads to collapse or settlement every year during the monsoon season,” an NDMC official aware of the proposal said. “The sewage lines are varying sizes ranging from a diameter of 350mm to 2,100mm, but most of the lines are more than 70 years old. These old lines need augmentation and replacement,” the official said. Officials said the repair works are at varying stages of planning and execution. “The work on the brick barrel line from Kushak Nallah to Aurobindo Marg at Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Marg has been awarded and it is likely to start by March. Similarly, the pre-consultancy work for desilting and rehabilitation of twin barrel line from C-Hexagon to Lodhi Road through Zakir Hussian Marg-Golf Course-Subramanium Bharti Marg has been completed and the work is likely to start in next financial year,” the official said. “Similarly, tenders have been invited for the rehabilitation of the sewer from Telegraph Lane to Kasturba Gandhi Marg via Madhavrao Scindia Marg,” the official said. They aren’t going to spring for free agents, and they need to trade some of their veteran contracts . Although it’s not a move that will rock the boat, Derek Falvey stuffed the organization’s stocking with the first acquisition of the offseason. Jovani Moran on the way out for Minnesota The Minnesota Twins made an appearance at the Winter Meetings, but they weren’t very active while present. The lone move came in the form of Rule 5 Draft selection Eiberson Castellano . Left-handed reliever Jovani Moran was available to clubs in that draft, but went unselected. Now he’s headed to the Boston Red Sox for utility man Mickey Gasper. We have acquired UTL Mickey Gasper from the Red Sox in exchange for LHP Jovani Móran. Moran didn’t pitch for the Twins last season as he underwent Tommy John surgery. He posted a 5.31 ERA across 42 1/3 innings in 2023 and a 2.21 ERA in 40 2/3 innings during 2022. The lefty looked like he could be an option for Rocco Baldelli ’s bullpen this season. Boston needed to clear room for the acquisition of Walker Buehler . Moran gives them a guy who can be a weapon if the command ever tightens up. His changeup remains a serious weapon. Mickey Gasper could solve Twins catching depth Gasper has an interesting profile. The 29-year-old was a 27th round pick by the New York Yankees in 2018. He made his major league debut last season with the Red Sox. The switch-hitter played in 13 games and tallied just 23 plate appearances. He scored a run while walking four times but is 0-for-18 to start his career. He has primarily split time between first base and catcher. A 15% caught stealing rate isn’t exactly ideal, but Gasper owns a better offensive profile. Across 407 minor league games, he has a .275/.392/.449 slash line. Last season between Double an Triple-A, Gasper owned a .970 OPS with 12 home runs. He has elite plate discipline and that was reflected by a 42/56 K/BB rate. It remains to be seen where the Minnesota Twins will go from here. This is another piece of the offseason puzzle though, and comes just before Santa Claus passes over Target Field. (The Center Square) – The latest federal numbers show the U.S. deficit is soaring as President Joe Biden heads out of office. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office released its monthly budget review on Monday, which showed that in the first two months of this fiscal year, the federal government has run up a deficit of $622 billion. “That amount is $242 billion more than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year,” CBO said in its report . That figure means the deficit is nearly 40% higher than this time last year. “The most alarming turkey in November was the federal government’s inability to live within its means,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement. “We are only two months into the fiscal year, and we have already borrowed a staggering $622 billion, with $365 billion in the month of November alone." Deficits never surpassed one trillion dollars before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, they remain well above one trillion and for this next fiscal year are well beyond the pace to surpass $1 trillion. The deficit last fiscal year was about $1.8 trillion. Billionaire Elon Musk, now an advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, lamented the debt, which is about $36 trillion, on X Monday. “If we don’t fix the deficit, everything will suffer, including essential spending like DoD, Medicare & Social Security,” Musk said. “It’s not optional.” CBO did explain that some of the increase is from accounting changes. Magazine: “Many corporate diversity, equity and inclusion programs have been under fire from conservative opponents for the better part of a year, and a growing number of businesses are scaling them back in an apparent response.” In the face of such disheartening retrenchment, I offered that “DEI values remain core to the Boulder Chamber mission and, even more relevant, to our core values.” Still, the current wave of political expediency is upon us. One institution noted that they will have to change the name of their DEI programming to avoid becoming a target of threats to federal funding. They hope to stay under the radar in a hostile environment for something that is currently in the crosshairs of those who command the purse strings, regardless of the clear business benefits and moral imperative. I hear similar talk from our friends in the climate-protection and clean-energy fields. For good reason, they worry about threats to their research budgets, and so should all of us. The economic impact of that research, including spin-off technology development and business enterprises, runs in the billions of dollars for Colorado, with a significant portion of those funds invested in research and businesses in Boulder. Let’s face it, we live in a town that is as blue as it gets on the political front at a time when red blankets our nation, reflecting the balance of control in Washington. Much of our economic vitality also rests on principles that have come under attack in the platitudes of politically heated election rhetoric. The approach we tend to take toward addressing social issues also is confronting new challenges. Well, hold on. As I said in a recent BizWest story, “There’s a great distance between the political rhetoric and what ultimately is approved through the legislative process and executive decision-making.” There will be consequences of any pendulum swing, such as we may be experiencing now, but it’s also a risky proposition to run too fast in the direction of current political winds. We should also resist straying from the foundation of an economy — one built on core values — that has served us so well. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be thoughtful regarding alignment of our work with current national administration goals. While “climate protection” might not be de rigueur these days, there is no question that our economy depends on the projections our climate scientists are making regarding global warming impacts. The insurance industry is paying attention. But also consider those who depend on our threatened water systems. Whether in red Arizona or blue California, your pharmaceutical companies, farms and breweries need to know that water will be flowing. And then there’s diversity, equity and inclusion. How terrible to consider pulling back from the progress we’ve been fighting to make in addressing systemic racism and injustice in our nation. At the same time, in the words of my good friend and communications consultant AJ Grant, “the goals and sentiments we hope to advance often get lost and cordoned off into fraught vocabulary.” It’s important to remember the fundamental ideal of DEI is about bringing the best and brightest voices and perspectives to the table, regardless of background, and circumstance. Ultimately, Grant notes, it is simply about “caring” for one another. Who can argue with that? Yes, there is a lump in my throat when I consider possible impacts to Boulder’s economy from the recent leadership change in Washington. In truth, though, we don’t know what is rhetoric and what changes will ultimately settle across the economic landscape. Regardless, I give thanks to the core values that have been the foundation of our success ... and know our economy and community will weather those changes in the political winds. (WTVF) — It now appears former Tennessee State University President Glenda Glover is receiving more money than previously reported. Glover admitted on Friday she has two agreements with the school - one was a buyout of her 5-year contract with the school if she agreed to retire early. The other is to continue working for the university as a President emeritus helping raise money and recruit new students. The two contracts total $1.7 million. "There's no guilt feelings. I have a retirement package," Glover said. "It's like someone asked you, would you give up your retirement package? No. You don't ask someone to give up their retirement package. That goes beyond the bounds of decency to ask me to give up a retirement package especially if I'm still doing a lot of work for the university." Glover failed to mention the existence of the second contract when she sat down with NewsChannel 5 Investigates earlier this week. “It’s not only fair what they paid me, it’s owed.” But she insists state lawmakers knew about the agreement. Glover said this is money she earned and continues to earn. Board members voted unanimously Friday to urge interim TSU president Ronald Johnson to end Glover's agreement. They said this deal was signed by the old Board of Trustees — not long before state lawmakers voted to replace the entire board. All of this came to light as we learned just how bad the university's financial problems are. In October the school was forced to lay off 114 employees to cut costs. This month, state leaders said the school would have to make bigger cuts, including degree programs and tenured professors. The state has been providing emergency funds this semester to keep the school afloat. But state leaders said that can't continue. The TSU Board of Trustees met this week to discuss the dire financial situation. Without financial intervention, the school would end the school year $46 million in the hole. Even after tapping into multiple school resources, it's likely the school will have just $3 million in cash at the end of next semester. This fall, the school eliminated ads at the Nashville International Airport, cut band trips to away football games and nixed the football team staying at a hotel near the Tennessee Titans stadium before home football games. The school is traveling in golf carts on campus, not vehicles, to keep fuel costs down. They are also repurposing assets, like furniture. The school also eliminated 117 contracts that duplicated services, saving $3.5 million. Trustees didn't discuss cutting into degree programs or tenured professors, despite the enrollment figures plummeting at the only public HBCU in the state. The school posted its fall enrollment figures in early November. Those show that the university only had 6,310 students enrolled for fall classes. In 2023, the school started the year with 8,198 students. So far for the spring, only 3,542 students have enrolled for the spring at TSU — which is less than projected. The school figured 4,390 students. Glover said she was asked to leave TSU two years ago State lawmakers recently chastised TSU for still having Glover on the payroll. Glover clarified that state lawmakers knew about her retirement package since they forced her to retire. "They sent a posse to me," Glover said on Wednesday to NewsChannel 5 Investigates . "To ask me to retire immediately. I didn't do that at the time. But I did know at some point we would come to a point where I would retire. This was key legislators telling me to retire. They were cowards. They sent others to me — people I trusted to talk to me about retiring. It was a very carefully constructed decision and agreement. What is this hypocrisy that's going on?" Glover calls these latest questions about her retirement package is just another example of the state trying to distract from the fact it has unfunded TSU for decades. So, she has no intentions of going back on the agreement that forced her to step down as president.

Moncton is proposing a 6.2 cent tax rate cut for most of the city next year while boosting spending on police, firefighters and transit. "The City of Moncton's financial position remains strong," Jacques Doucet, Moncton's general manager of finance services, said as council began going through the the 521-page draft budget Tuesday. "But it doesn't mean we don't have challenges. Everything is about prioritization and we can only invest so many dollars in so many areas." The document covers the city's $223.8 million operating budget, a utilities budget of $46.2 million, and a $62.6 million capital budget. Moncton council began deliberating its 2025 budget on Tuesday. The budget shows a home valued at $350,000 would see its tax bill rise by $260 to $5,241. TikTok is challenging the federal government’s order to shut down its operations in Canada. The company filed in documents in Federal Court in Vancouver on Thursday. The government ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian business in November after a national security review of the Chinese company behind the social media platform. That means TikTok must “wind down” its operations in Canada, though the app will continue to be available to Canadians. TikTok wants the court to overturn the government’s order and to place a pause on the order while the court hears the case. It is claiming the minister’s decision was “unreasonable” and “driven by improper purposes.” The review was carried out through the Investment Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with potential to harm national security. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in a statement at the time the government was taking action to address “specific national security risks,” though it didn’t specify what those risks were. Iran said on Sunday that it would hold nuclear talks in the coming days with the three European countries that initiated a censure resolution against it adopted by the UN's atomic watchdog. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting of the deputy foreign ministers of Iran, France, Germany and the United Kingdom would take place on Friday, without specifying a venue. "A range of regional and international issues and topics, including the issues of Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the nuclear issue, will be discussed," the spokesman said in a foreign ministry statement. Baghaei described the upcoming meeting as a continuation of talks held with the countries in September on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents' stunning march across Syria accelerated Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and that government forces had withdrawn from the central city of Homs. The government was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street, even if they could roil the global economy were they to take effect. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to top the all-time high it set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 123 points, or 0.3%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6% as Microsoft and Big Tech led the way. Stock markets abroad mostly fell after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China once he takes office. But the movements were mostly modest. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada’s main index edged down by less than 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. The consequences otherwise for markets and the global economy could be painful. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. And unlike tariffs in Trump’s first term, his latest proposal would affect products across the board. General Motors sank 9%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.3%. The value of the Mexican peso fell 1.8% against the U.S. dollar. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support for the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the economy, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed’s last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another mixed set of profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates imposed by the Fed to get inflation under control. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. Kohl’s tumbled 17% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.9% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. Gains of 3.2% for Amazon and 2.2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. All told, the S&P 500 rose 34.26 points to 6,021.63. The Dow gained 123.74 to 44,860.31, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 119.46 to 19,174.30. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. BBC Return to Paradise fans said the same thing as they tuned in to watch the Death in Paradise spin-off on Friday night. Anna Samson has taken on the role of the show's first female lead, Mackenzie Clarke, while Lloyd Griffith plays her sidekick, Colin Cartwright. While fans had mixed opinions about the spin-off, they were thrilled to see Ardal O'Hanlon, who played former detective Jack Mooney, return. Ardal has taken on the role of Mackenzie's boss in the new series. During one scene, Mackenzie phoned Jack, who was in London, although the conversation was somewhat mysterious. "Mooney," he said as he answered the phone, to which Mackenzie pleaded: "Don't hang up." He continued: "I am actually at work," and Mackenzie continued, "Yes, obviously. What is the situation? Is there going to be an inquiry?" Ardal O'Hanlon has made a return as Jack Mooney Jack hesitated as he explained: "No, I am pretty happy with my mobile plan at the moment. More data than I could ever need, thank you." Mackenzie quickly realised her boss couldn't talk as she said: "I need to know." However, Jack quickly made his excuses as he was being watched by another officer, so he hung up the phone. Taking to social media to share their thoughts about Ardal's return, one fan said: "So great to see Jack Mooney back. Absolutely love him." Another agreed: "MY FAVE MY FAVE MY FAVEEEEEEE." Anna plays Mackenzie Clarke A third added: "Yaaaaaaaaaay my fave irish DI is back," while someone else went on to say: "Jack Mooney return finally." A fifth shared their excitement: "Oommmmggg what??? Please tell me this will be available on Britbox starting Friday." When speaking about Ardal's return Anna revealed: "We can expect Ardal to make more than one appearance than just in the first episode because he plays my boss back at the Metropolitan Police." That is certainly a wink and a nod to the original. "I didn't get to meet Ardal because he shot his stuff in London and my stuff in Australia. I want to meet all of [the Death in Paradise cast]. I think it is something about playing the lead detective in a Paradise show, so I want to talk to them; I would love to meet them all." Reflecting on Ardal's involvement in the spin-off, Lloyd shared that he had previously worked with the actor. "I have gigged with Ardal separately as a comedian, and that was mind-blowing," he expressed warmly about his co-star. "I still get giddy when I watch the first episode, this is Ardal O'Hanlon." Pakistani police Monday fired tear gas canisters at supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to stop them from entering the capital, where they hoped to stage a sit-in to demand his release, officials said. The firing of tear gas came shortly after demonstrators — who traveled 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the restive northwest — began arriving and gathering near Islamabad. They defied a lockdown, previous tear gas and widespread arrests despite a ban on rallies in the city.
