What does a spy agency give for Christmas ? How about a riddle wrapped in an enigma inside a mystery. GCHQ, Britain’s electronic and cyber-intelligence agency , on Wednesday published its annual Christmas Challenge – a seasonal greeting card that doubles as a set of fiendishly difficult puzzles designed to excite young minds about solving cyphers and unearthing clues. The challenge is aimed at young people aged 11 to 18, who are encouraged to work in teams and use “lateral thinking, ingenuity and perseverance” to crack the seven brainteasers set by GCHQ’s “in-house puzzlers.” The card is sent by the head of GCHQ — short for Government Communications Headquarters — to other national security chiefs around the world. LOUIS (AP) — Fourteen North Korean nationals have been indicted in a scheme using information technology workers with false identities to contract with U.S. companies — workers who then funneled their wages to North Korea for development of ballistic missiles and other weapons, the head of the FBI office in St. Louis said Thursday. The scheme involving thousands of IT workers generated more than $88 million for the North Korean government, Ashley T. Johnson, special agent in charge of the St. Louis FBI office, said at a news conference. In addition to their wages, the workers stole sensitive information from companies or threatened to leak information in exchange for extortion payments, Johnson said. Victims included defrauded companies and people whose identities were stolen from across the U.S., including Missouri, Johnson said. The indictments were filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis. All 14 people face wire fraud, money laundering, identity theft and other charges. Most of those accused are believed to be in North Korea. Johnson acknowledged that bringing them to justice will be difficult. To help, the U.S. Department of State is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to any of the suspects. Federal authorities said the scheme worked like this: North Korea dispatched thousands of IT workers to get hired and work remotely or as freelancers for U.S. companies. The IT workers involved in the scheme sometimes used stolen identities. In other instances, they paid Americans to use their home Wi-Fi connections, or to pose in on-camera job interviews as the IT workers. Johnson said the FBI is going after those “domestic enablers,” too. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Johnson said. “If your company has hired fully remote IT workers, more likely than not, you have hired or at least interviewed a North Korean national working on behalf of the North Korean government,” Johnson said. The Justice Department in recent years has sought to expose and disrupt a broad variety of criminal schemes aimed at bolstering the North Korean regime, including its nuclear weapons program. In 2021, the Justice Department charged three North Korean computer programmers and members of the government’s military intelligence agency in a broad range of global hacks that officials say were carried out at the behest of the regime. Law enforcement officials said at the time that the prosecution highlighted the profit-driven motive behind North Korea’s criminal hacking, a contrast from other adversarial nations like Russia, China and Iran that are generally more interested in espionage, intellectual property theft or even disrupting democracy. In May 2022, the State Department, Department of the Treasury, and the FBI issued an advisory warning of attempts by North Koreans “to obtain employment while posing as non-North Korean nationals.” The advisory noted that in recent years, the regime of Kim Jong Un “has placed increased focus on education and training” in IT-related subjects. In October 2023 , the FBI in St. Louis announced the seizure of $1.5 million and 17 domain names as part of the investigation. Here is what we know about the extent of the abuses committed: In 2013 a former Syrian army photographer known by the codename "Caesar" fled the country, taking with him some 55,000 graphic images taken between 2011 and 2013. The photos, authenticated by experts, show corpses tortured and starved to death in Syrian prisons. Some people had their eyes gouged out. The photos showed emaciated bodies, people with wounds on the back or stomach, and also a picture of hundreds of corpses in a shed surrounded by plastic bags used for burials. Assad's Syrian government said only that the pictures were "political". But Caesar testified to a US Congress committee and his photographs inspired a 2020 US law which imposed economic sanctions on Syria and judicial proceedings in Europe against Assad's entourage. In Germany and Sweden eight people suspected of crime against humanity were arrested in July in an operation codenamed "Caesar". One would need usernames and passwords which the deceased persons may take with them into the grave. There are also issues of privacy. Who has the ‘right’ to read or permit access to those correspondences? In the pre-internet era, there was the good old letter or card, or going back further, to vellum or papyrus or palm leaves. All perishable materials, but when they do survive the ravages of time, they can be quite revelatory. We know a lot about the towering composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) largely because an enormous archive of his letters survives. In the life-story of child prodigy and tragically short-lived Mozart, his father Leopold (1719 – 1787) looms large, as the stern tutor of both Wolfgang and his elder, equally gifted sister Maria Anna (‘Nannerl’). The tone of Mozart’s letters to his father is always deferential, often placatory. The children’s mother Anna Maria Walburga Mozart (née Pertl; 1720 – 1778) sadly remains in historiographic shadow, like her daughter Nannerl. She gave birth to seven children, of whom only Wolfgang and Nannerl survived infancy. She almost died giving birth to Wolfgang due to a retained placenta and the high risk of infection from manoeuvres to forcibly remove it. Her early life was racked by poverty and illness perhaps related to it. Legal documents from the time describe her as “constantly ill” (1733) and “the constantly ill bedridden daughter” (1739). Nevertheless, after she wedded Leopold Mozart, music historian Herrmann Abert (1871 -1927) wrote that “the two were regarded at the time as the handsomest couple in Salzburg”. He further described her as “a true mother to her children, who invariably sought refuge with her when their father’s strict hand weighed unduly heavily upon them. Wolfgang loved and admired her to distraction.” This becomes poignantly and painfully evident from Mozart’s letters shortly after her death. In 1777, he ventured out from Salzburg in search of employment accompanied only by his mother. The itinerary included Augsburg, Mannheim, Paris, and Munich. It was an eventful trip. In Mannheim he encountered its famed orchestra, reputedly the best in Europe at the time. He also fell deeply in love with soprano Aloysia Weber (but would eventually end up marrying her sister Constanze, also a trained singer). But the much-desired employment didn’t materialise, and running low on funds, mother and son fell into debt and had to pawn valuables by the time they were in Paris. It appears that Anna Maria took ill there, and there may have been delay in calling a doctor, probably due to lack of funds. She died on July 3, 1778. His distraught letter to a friend says it all: “My very dear friend, Mourn with me! This has been the most melancholy day of my life; I am now writing at two o›clock in the morning. I must tell you that my mother, my darling mother, is no more. God has called her to Himself; I clearly see that it was His will to take her from us, and I must learn to submit to the will of God. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Only think of all the distress, anxiety, and care I have endured for the last 14 days. She died quite unconscious, and her life went out like a light. She confessed three days before, took the sacrament, and received extreme unction. The last three days, however, she was constantly delirious, and to-day, at twenty minutes past five o’clock, her features became distorted, and she lost all feeling and perception. I pressed her hand, I spoke to her, but she did not see me, she did not hear me, and all feeling was gone. DETROIT — Another home of a University of Michigan leader was vandalized, including the spray-painting of a vehicle with a pro-Palestinian slogan, a regent said Monday. UM Regent Jordan Acker said his Huntington Woods home and vehicle were both vandalized early Monday. Someone threw a mason jar through one of his home's windows and spray-painted the words "Divest and Free Palestine" on an SUV, said Acker, who is Jewish. "My first thought when I heard the glass breaking is that one of my daughters had gone downstairs to get something to drink and dropped it," he said. "It was very loud and it sounded like dishes breaking. "It was only about 30 seconds later when the police arrived that I came down and realized what had happened." Acker said he later found out a neighbor called the police after seeing a couple of people running away from the house. Authorities found fragments of a glass jar inside the house along with a foul-smelling liquid as well as a second jar outside of the home, he said. Acker called the upside-down red triangle the vandals also painted on the vehicle along with the graffiti particularly disturbing and upsetting. He considers the incident a threat against his family. "That symbol has been used by Hamas to mean something is a legitimate military target," the regent said. "This is a threat. This was not a protest. This is terrorism." The incident comes about six months after vandals targeted Acker's Southfield law office. They spray-painted the words "Free Palestine" and "Divest Now" on the building. The law firm said the attack was being investigated as a hate crime. Acker said the incident at his office remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. Officials for the University of Michigan issued a statement Monday on X calling the vandalism of Acker's house "a clear act of anti-Semitic intimidation." "The University of Michigan condemns these criminal acts in the strongest possible terms," the school said. "They are abhorrent, and unfortunately, just the latest in a number of incidents where individuals have been harassed because of their work on behalf of the university. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We call on our community to come together in solidarity and to firmly reject all forms of bigotry and violence." The university has been embroiled in debate and protests about Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 and Israel's counterattack, prompting a war that continues to this day. University events have been disrupted by demonstrators, an encampment was built on campus for a month before being dismantled by police, and regents and other university leaders have been targeted with protests and vandalism. The incident comes about two months after graffiti was spray-painted on the homes of UM President Santa Ono and Erik Lundberg, UM's chief investment officer. The vandalism was done on the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by the militant group Hamas, which runs Gaza. It also followed months of demonstrations and disruptions by UM students and their supporters, who demand the university divest from its portfolio any holdings linked to Israel since the country's counter-attack on Hamas in Gaza — which has killed more than 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian Health Ministry. The messages at Ono's home were spray-painted in red on his house and sidewalk. They included "Coward," "Divest now," along with upside-down triangles and "intifada," an Arabic word meaning uprising or resistance. Similar words were spray painted at Lundberg's home, including "complicit" and "intifada." Officials decry vandalism Mark Bernstein, vice chair of the university's Board of Regents, decried the vandalism in a statement to The Detroit News. Bernstein, who is president and managing partner of the Sam Bernstein Law Firm PLLC, was first elected to the Board of Regents in 2012 and re-elected in 2020. “The repeated targeting of my colleague, a Jewish elected official, and his family, is conduct that demands condemnation and aggressive criminal prosecution," he said. "This act reveals the dangerous antisemitism at the core of this radical movement that has adopted terrorist symbols in their repugnant rhetoric." Others also condemned the attack on Monday. U.S. Rep. and U.S. Senator-elect Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, categorized the act as criminal. "This makes three attacks on University of Michigan Regent Jordan Acker’s home and office in just over six months," she said in a statement. "This is targeted hate meant to intimidate and threaten him and his family, and law enforcement has a responsibility to move quickly to connect the dots and do something about it. This is not activism or free speech on behalf of a cause — indeed this criminal activity undercuts the very cause they purport to care about." U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, called the incident sickening. "Jordan Acker is a dedicated public servant and he and his family should be safe in their own home," she said in a post on X. "I am sickened by the anti-Semitic attack on his home last night. Vandalism, violence, and bigotry have no place in America. Enough. Our Jewish brothers and sisters deserve to live in security and peace." Also on X, former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Grand Rapids Township, decried what he called "another disgusting antisemitic attack" on Acker. "Political leaders in Michigan must take this vile behavior seriously — vandalism and harassment is reprehensible enough, but left unchecked threatens to escalate into physical violence," he wrote. Acker details what happened Acker, an attorney who has been on the board since 2019, also posted about the incident on his Instagram page on Monday. "In the very early hours of this morning, while my wife, my three young daughters and I were asleep in our beds, we were awakened by the sound of two heavy thrown through the front window of our house," he said in his post. "While my eldest daughter ran into our room, frightened by the sound of breaking glass, I ran downstairs, saw the broken window, and then ran outside to find my wife’s car had been graffitied by anti-Semitic vandals." He added in the post: "This is the third time that I — and now my family — have been the target of these Klan-like tactics. We all need to call out this cowardly act attacking my family and my home for what it truly is — terrorism. And like we always do in this great nation when we’re confronted with terrorism — I will not let fear win. All this does is harden my resolve to continue to do the right thing for the University and the Michigan voters who elected me." He concluded the post with: "I call upon members of the Michigan community to publicly repudiate this vile anti-Semitic intimidation and to offer full support to law enforcement to root out these bigots so they see the consequences for their actions." Acker said he won't disclose what safety measures he will take to protect his family and himself following Monday's incident. "These messages, whether they're left at my office or my home, are intended to intimidate a Jewish elected official," he said. "But I am not going to be intimidated by them." Acker said he calls on every elected official in Michigan, whether they're on the political right or the left, to publicly condemn this sort of behavior. "It's not enough to condemn privately," he said. "We have to say publicly this is not acceptable no matter where you stand on the issue of Israel and Palestine. He said he would like to see the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit and the FBI become involved in the investigation into the attack. "It's pretty obvious this is a civil rights violation and I wish the U.S. Attorney's Office would take it seriously," Acker said. The regent also urges people on UM's campus who know who the vandals are and where they are to come forward to stop incidents like this from happening again. In mid-May, pro-Palestinian protesters delivered a list of demands to the homes of the eight regents. They also "decorated" the front lawn of then UM Board of Regents Chair Sarah Hubbard's home with "scenes of genocide in Palestine" along with a taped list of demands for divestment from Israel on the door of her home. This time, it is being stirred up from outside the city with questions swirling around why Montembeault was added to Team Canada. Yet, the 28-year-old goaltender does have the pedigree to warrant such a position. Team Canada Controversy During a podcast with Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now, NHL insider John Shannon said that he believes that Hockey Canada’s decision to include the Canadiens’ starter might have been politically motivated. His reasoning? That Hockey Canada is politically motivated and that because there was no representation from Quebec, they had to add one player to the roster to cover that region. While more than half of the games of the Four Nations Face-off tournament are scheduled to be played in Montreal, that doesn’t mean there was a need or any consideration that went into having a Montreal Canadiens on the roster. WASHINGTON — Veterans in northern Nevada will have an “elevated” healthcare experience, according to U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen. Rosen and fellow Nevada Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto introduced legislation to authorize the construction of a new veterans hospital in Reno through the Veterans Affairs Major Medical Facility Authorization Act that was passed in the Senate and was signed by President Joe Biden on Nov. 27. Sen. Jacky Rosen The Reno VA Medical Center serves veterans from Sacramento to Salt Lake City. The new state-of-the-art facility is expected to serve 200,000 veterans, Rosen said. “We have veterans that come from all over.” Rosen said the hospital will be constructed on 40 to 50 acres, and a site is being considered near the University of Nevada, Reno, which could benefit both students and veterans. Rosen told the Elko Daily Free Press about the benefits of the new Reno VA hospital and ongoing efforts to support veterans following their discharge from active service. Speaking about the hospital, Rosen said it would “elevate healthcare overall,” noting programs and training in social work, physical therapy and nursing based out of UNR and Truckee Meadows Community Colleges could benefit from the new VA hospital in the area. This anomalistic meeting of progressive Democrats and conservative Republicans in the antitrust space even garnered a mash-up moniker – the “ Khanservaties ” – a group of conservative Republicans including Missouri Senator Josh Hawley and erstwhile Attorney General nominee and former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, who praised Biden-appointed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan. Vice President-elect J. D. Vance also provided backhanded praise for Khan, stating , “I look at Lina Khan as one of the few people in the Biden administration that I think is doing a pretty good job.” Ironically, while for distinct reasons and from opposite sides of the political spectrum, leaders in both political parties have favored a pro-worker, anti-tech antitrust agenda that has permeated antitrust enforcement for the last 8 years. Antitrust “techlash,” at least against disfavored tech companies, and a focus on workers will likely continue during Trump’s second term. We predict antitrust enforcement during the second Trump administration will be unpredictable, and probably idiosyncratic, likely reflecting president-elect Trump’s views of specific companies or industries. That said, we expect criminal antitrust enforcement priorities will remain much the same, while FTC likely will take a less aggressive stances regarding the use of competition rulemaking and the exercise of enforcement powers under Section 5 of the FTC Act (e.g., the non-compete rule), as well as mothballing Robinson-Patman Act enforcement. Merger review is harder to predict and will be a mixed bag, as described below. Antitrust Agency Leadership & Staff – Some Stay and Some Will Go On December 4, 2024, President-Elect Trump announced that Gail Slater would be nominated to be the Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for Antitrust at the Department of Justice (DOJ), stating “Big Tech has run wild for years, stifling competition in our most innovative sector and, as we all know, using its market power to crack down on the rights of so many Americans, as well as those of Little Tech! I was proud to fight these abuses in my First Term, and our Department of Justice’s antitrust team will continue that work under Gail’s leadership.” Slater has been an economic advisor to then-Senator J.D. Vance, an attorney advisor and staff attorney at the Federal Trade Commission and held roles at an Internet Trade Association and Fox. Her focus has been on tech policy. Plans for the FTC have not been announced. If FTC Chair Khan resigns, as is typical when there is a presidential party change, one of the two Republican Commissioners is expected to be named acting FTC Chair. This will leave two Republican Commissioners and two Democratic Commissioners until a replacement is confirmed, likely creating an impasse for any non-bipartisan decisions and slowing Commission decision-making. Although top political positions at both the FTC and DOJ change when the political party that holds the White House changes, each agency is comprised primarily of career staff. While there is much buzz about career staff worry and departures , it is also notable that during the Biden administration the DOJ Antitrust Division did a lot of hiring , and those attorneys will continue to do work through political transition. Antitrust Agency Resources – Can they Dodge the DOGE? The newly announced Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) executive advisory committee to be co-chaired by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy and focused on government efficiency will likely have its sights set on antitrust enforcement agencies. The One Agency Act , makes the FTC low-lying fruit for the DOGE. The Act, which passed out of the House Judiciary Committee in April 2024, would consolidate antitrust enforcement authority by transferring all FTC antitrust functions, employees, assets, and funding to the DOJ. The FTC would maintain its consumer protection authority. Similar legislation proposed to end the overlap in FTC and DOJ merger review and civil investigation authority has been previously unsuccessful, but the Act’s prospects for passage seem higher now given the Republican majorities in both houses of Congress. The FTC and DOJ’s informal clearance process for civil antitrust matters has been derided for inefficiency and would seem an easy focus for the DOGE’s prioritization of government efficiency. While personnel and open matters could move from FTC to DOJ this consolidation would be substantively significant if accomplished. For instance, the FTC has expanded its investigations of unfair methods of competition under Section 5 of the FTC Act, which it claims provides for broader enforcement of than the Sherman Act, and that vehicle would likely cease to exist if the antitrust enforcement is consolidated within DOJ. Possible antitrust enforcement consolidation within DOJ makes President-elect Trump’s pick of Gail Slater to lead the DOJ Antitrust Division even more significant. Criminal Enforcement – Likely to Stay the Same Cartels have been called the “the Supreme evil of antitrust” by the Supreme Court and criminally prosecuting agreements among competitors to fix prices, rig bids, or allocate markets or employees are likely to remain a high priority for the DOJ’s Antitrust Division during Trump’s second term. Notably, the Deputy Assistant Attorney General (DAAG) for Criminal Enforcement at the DOJ’s Antitrust Division is not a political appointee and the current criminal leadership typically stays intact through administration changes, providing continuity for the Antitrust Division’s criminal program. In addition, the DOJ’s Antitrust Division has the sole authority to criminally prosecute antitrust offenses under the Sherman Act, the One Agency act would not impact continuity in criminal prosecution. While Biden administration antitrust enforcement was touted as aggressive, DOJ’s own criminal enforcement statistics show that during the first Trump administration the number of criminal antitrust cases filed and the amount of total criminal fines and penalties were slightly higher than during the Biden Administration. With past as prologue, we do not anticipate a dip in criminal antitrust enforcement during the second Trump administration, although administration priorities may change. One area we expect to remain an antitrust priority during the next administration is criminally prosecuting collusion relating to government contracts, procurement, and funding. The Antitrust Division-led Procurement Collusion Strike Force (PCSF) has been highly active prosecuting price fixing, bid rigging, market allocation and related fraud relating to government procurement and funds during the Biden Administration, but it was actually launched in 2019 during the first Trump Administration. The prosecution of collusion where government taxpayer dollars are lost typically garners bipartisan support and is notably consistent with desire for government efficiency espoused as part of Trump’s 2024 campaign platform. Accordingly, we expect the DOJ to continue to continue to support the PCSF’s focus on prosecuting fraud, waste, and collusion in government procurement during the second Trump Administration. We also expect criminal enforcement of labor-focused cases including criminal investigation and prosecution of no poach and wage fixing cases to continue in the second Trump administration, as it remained an antitrust focus from 2016-2020 and the original criminal cases in this area were brought during Trump’s first term. One area of uncertainty in the criminal antitrust space is whether the Antitrust Division will continue its focus on criminal monopolization cases. In 2022, the Antitrust Division announced that it intended to criminally investigate and prosecute individuals or companies who violate Section 2 of the Sherman Act and proceeded to bring its first criminal monopolization cases. This was a marked change after decades of criminal antitrust enforcement focusing solely on hardcore, per se anticompetitive agreements like price fixing, bid rigging or market allocation among two or more horizontal competitors under Section 1 of the Sherman Act. Section 2 of the Sherman Act traditionally focuses on alleged unilateral anticompetitive practices by one company used to maintain or obtain its monopoly, and these alleged violations are typically brought as civil monopolization cases (e.g. tech cases). These cases are likely to be resource intensive given the need to prove an intent to monopolize to a beyond a reasonable doubt standard and may be deprioritized by the new administration. Overall, we expect criminal antitrust enforcement to remain much the same as it has been for the last eight years. Merger Review: All I Need is a Remedy The Biden administration’s DOJ and FTC effectuated three significant merger review policy changes, and it is possible that all three may be reversed in the Trump Administration. First, the Agencies revised substantially the Merger Guidelines, which is the substantive framework they use to evaluate whether they consider a proposed transaction to substantially lessen competition under Section 7 of the Clayton Act. Given those new Guidelines have been in place for only a year and the subject of considerable controversy (perhaps most notably taking the position that a firm with 30% market share should be considered “dominant” under existing antitrust law), it is possible, and perhaps even likely, they will be withdrawn, and the agencies will go back to operating under the 2010 Horizontal Merger Guidelines. Second, the agencies finalized new Hart-Scott-Rodino Act rules , which will be effective February 10 th , 2025. The new rules expand the types of information merging parties must provide and have been the subject of some criticism in the market. They were issued on a bi-partisan basis (a unanimous vote at the FTC), however, and we do not expect the new administration to withdraw or revise them, Third, during the Biden administration, FTC and DOJ have shown severe skepticism toward remedies (i.e., settlements) in mergers, with only a handful of remedies accepted by the agencies. Prior to the Biden administration, structural remedies, whereby the merging parties divest a product or line of business to a third party to resolve the agency’s competitive concerns, were common, with both agencies issuing specific merger remedies guidance. We expect the agencies to return to this practice in a Trump Administration. Aside from policy, the merger enforcement records of the previous few administrations is fairly consistent, but also difficult to gauge as we discussed in a previous post . In addition to the tech industry, transactions in the healthcare industry have consistently been subject to scrutiny across administrations. That said, we do think that one industry – private equity – will not be the target it has been under the Biden administration . Robust Civil Antitrust Enforcement, Techlash, and Focus on AI – Likely to Continue Big Tech has faced heightened antitrust scrutiny, and we expect tech and AI are likely to remain under the antitrust microscope during Trump’s second term. Trump and Congressional Republicans have railed against Big Tech consolidation and tech monopolies as a threat to free speech excluding conservative voices. Concerns of a different focus, but concerns with the same tech targets, nonetheless. While Trump also has high-powered backers in tech, including Elon Musk, we can expect antitrust “techlash” to continue during the next Trump Administration, at least against tech companies who have fallen out of Trump’s favor. Trump’s nomination of Gail Slater as AAG for Antitrust at the DOJ and his statements about big tech running wild and stifling competition when announcing her nomination further underscore this resolve. AI and the use of antitrust law as a means to reign in those who wield its power is a hot area of focus without much clarity on how the next administration will proceed. One thing that is clear is that President-elect Trump intends to end the Biden AI Executive. As stated in the 2024 GOP Platform , “We will repeal Joe Biden’s dangerous Executive Order that hinders AI Innovation, and imposes Radical Leftwing ideas on the development of this technology. In its place, Republicans support AI Development rooted in Free Speech and Human Flourishing.” Trump repeated this numerous times on the campaign trail. What, if anything, the Trump administration will do in the AI space remains to be seen. So, we are likely to see an overall tension between a desire for deregulation and a desire to protect from perceived AI risks, and we will be watching closely how the next administration tackles those issues and the use of antitrust laws for this purpose. Conclusion While we expect some easing of antitrust pressures for merging parties, we also expect robust but likely unpredictable and possibly selective antitrust enforcement over the next four years that attempts to balance a desire for deregulation with a dash of Khan-era populist beliefs and continued disdain for Big Tech. State enforcers and private litigants are not beholden to the President, and it is expected they will both step up enforcement and litigation and play a prominent role in antitrust over the next four years. The president pardoned Hunter Biden late Sunday evening, reversing his previous pledges with a grant of clemency that covers more than a decade of any federal crimes his son might have committed. The 82-year-old president said in a statement that his son’s prosecution on charges of tax evasion and falsifying a federal weapons purchase form were politically motivated. “He believes in the justice system, but he also believes that politics infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who along with Biden and other White House officials insisted for months that Hunter Biden would not get a pardon . That explanation did not satisfy some Democrats, angry that Biden’s reversal could make it harder to take on Trump , who has argued that multiple indictments and one conviction against him were a matter of Biden and Democrats turning the justice system against him. “This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wrote of Biden on the social media platform X. “When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation,” the governor continued, a reference to the president invoking fatherhood in explaining his decision. “Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son.” Rep. In a post on his social media site Friday, Trump said his party would try to end the practice when he returns to office. “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,” he wrote. Setting clocks forward one hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall is intended to maximize daylight during summer months, but has long been subject to scrutiny. Daylight saving time was first adopted as a wartime measure in 1942. Lawmakers have occasionally proposed getting rid of the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill named the Sunshine Protection Act , had proposed making daylight saving time permanent. The measure was sponsored by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump has tapped to helm the State Department.
