He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.” Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded The Carter Center in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to eradicate guinea worm infections as one of many health initiatives. Swinging hammers into their 90s, the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians revisit his presidency and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. Despite claims of the demise of mainstream media , there are still many people who refer to traditional news sources, particularly in uncertain times when accurate information is at a premium. Based on a global study of the early stages of the pandemic , most people regardless of age ranked traditional media outlets (newspapers, television and radio) and the social media accounts belonging to these outlets as their primary sources of information during COVID-19. Media in the pandemic The pandemic resulted in an increase in demand for traditional media. In Canada, an April 2020 survey found that less than 10 per cent of respondents relied on social media as their main source of information; 51 per cent relied on local, national and international news outlets, and 30 per cent relied on daily briefings from public health agencies and political leaders. All major daily television news programs nearly doubled their year-to-date, average-minute audience. Media coverage was indispensable during the pandemic for three reasons: First, the media communicated important health and economic information to the public. Second, the media highlighted the struggles of vulnerable communities affected by the pandemic when non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that typically addressed such issues were struggling themselves. Almost half of charities and NGOs received no support from permanent donors during the pandemic . Finally, the media played an important role in supporting democratic accountability when government policymaking was frequent and spending was high but parliamentary and legislative checks were reduced . When comparing legislative sittings between 2018-19 and 2020-21, for example, provincial legislatures met anywhere from 5.5 per cent (Alberta) to 62.5 per cent (Nova Scotia) less often . Despite these important roles, there were important limitations to how the media reported the uncertainty of the pandemic. Lessons from COVID-19 Media is prone to exploiting cognitive biases. According to risk psychologists, people are typically more concerned about risks that are unknown and have high dread characteristics . A pandemic has many of these characteristics, which made it fertile ground for sustained and, at times, sensationalized coverage, focusing on conflict and emotion, excluding probability data, oversimplifying complex matters, and vilifying those who went against the grain. Here are some salient examples. Despite the frequent claims to “follow the science” that featured so prominently in the media, U.S. research showed that coverage of the pandemic by American publications with a national audience tended to be more negative than the coverage by scientific journals, international publications and regional media. In 2020, 87 per cent of COVID-19 coverage in U.S. media was deemed negative, emphasizing bad news and amplifying conflict and disagreement over government policies, regardless of whether different voices represented a small minority or a sizeable amount of the population. Psychologists refer to identifiable-victim effect , when people focus on individuals and consequences and omit probability data. COVID-19’s serious toll in long-term care (LTC) homes, and the poor conditions found in some of those homes, was widely covered in 2020. However, even among those with loved ones in long-term care, over 78 per cent commented that they were satisfied with the service of the LTC facility — a fact that was virtually unobtainable if one depended solely on popular media for information. During the third wave of the pandemic, the media ran stories about Canadian children becoming seriously ill even though youth made up only two per cent of hospitalizations . While it is true that stories about sick kids are newsworthy, they can also be sensationalist and exploitative . After more than a year of COVID-19 stories and high death counts, at times it was difficult to distinguish between lower-probability and higher-probability cases, which is a fundamental characteristic of any risk problem. The media also tended to vilify young people when they broke public health orders and gathering limits . Despite being at low risk of severe illness throughout the pandemic, young people paid a very heavy price for governments’ responses. One study found that younger adults had to implement more behavioural changes than older individuals to comply with COVID-19 restrictions . The political priorities of young people — housing, social justice, environment and affordability — received much less attention from the media during the pandemic. RFK Jr.’s nomination The role of the health secretary is partly an advisory role. RFK Jr. would influence as much as lead . Still, his appointment would be consequential. Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director at the American Public Health Association , said of Kennedy’s nomination: “ More people will get sick, and I’m really concerned more people will die .” Decentralized technology is changing the way we consume media. Despite Trump’s use of unconventional media strategies during the election campaign , it’s clear that the mainstream media play a disproportionately important role in how we consume information. Part of the challenge lies in how news sources maintain trustworthiness among their audiences. Trustworthiness depends on being transparent, knowledgeable and concerned . Mainstream media will now have to develop new standards for transparency, particularly on how it uses and communicates scientific data. Media need to ensure that emotive stories that animate coverage are informed by appropriate probability and consequence data. This will help ensure that the audience knows whether the cases in media are shown as exceptions to the norm, or pervasive. Mark Young, Woolery's podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. Woolery, with his matinee idol looks, coiffed hair and ease with witty banter, was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007 and earned a daytime Emmy nomination in 1978. In 1983, Woolery began an 11-year run as host of TV’s “Love Connection,” for which he coined the phrase, “We’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds,” a two-fingered signature dubbed the “2 and 2.” In 1984, he hosted TV’s “Scrabble,” simultaneously hosting two game shows on TV until 1990. “Love Connection,” which aired long before the dawn of dating apps, had a premise that featured either a single man or single woman who would watch audition tapes of three potential mates and then pick one for a date. A couple of weeks after the date, the guest would sit with Woolery in front of a studio audience and tell everybody about the date. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. On Wynette’s 1971 album “We Sure Can Love Each Other,” Woolery wrote “The Joys of Being a Woman” with lyrics including “See our baby on the swing/Hear her laugh, hear her scream.” After his TV career ended, Woolery went into podcasting. In an interview with The New York Times, he called himself a gun-rights activist and described himself as a conservative libertarian and constitutionalist. He said he hadn’t revealed his politics in liberal Hollywood for fear of retribution. He teamed up with Mark Young in 2014 for the podcast “Blunt Force Truth” and soon became a full supporter of Donald Trump while arguing minorities don’t need civil rights and causing a firestorm by tweeting an antisemitic comment linking Soviet Communists to Judaism. “President Obama’s popularity is a fantasy only held by him and his dwindling legion of juice-box-drinking, anxiety-dog-hugging, safe-space-hiding snowflakes,” he said. Devastating photo of Joe Biden leaks.” During the early stages of the pandemic, Woolery initially accused medical professionals and Democrats of lying about the virus in an effort to hurt the economy and Trump’s chances for reelection to the presidency. “The most outrageous lies are the ones about COVID-19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, media, Democrats, our doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it,” Woolery wrote in July 2020. Trump retweeted that post to his 83 million followers. By the end of the month, nearly 4.5 million Americans had been infected with COVID-19 and more than 150,000 had died. Just days later, Woolery changed his stance, announcing his son had contracted COVID-19. “To further clarify and add perspective, COVID-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones,” Woolery posted before his account was deleted. Woolery later explained on his podcast that he never called COVID-19 “a hoax” or said “it’s not real,” just that “we’ve been lied to.” Woolery also said it was “an honor to have your president retweet what your thoughts are and think it’s important enough to do that.” In addition to his wife, Woolery is survived by his sons Michael and Sean and his daughter Melissa, Young said.With so many free VPNs available, why would you consider paying for one? Since free VPNs need funding, they often sell your data to third parties. Who are these exactly? You may have encountered a few of the big ones: companies like Acxiom, Experian, River City Media, and LocalBlox. While these brokers only sell you targeted ads, the biggest threat comes from cybercriminals on the dark web that do a lot worse . In the past, I was quite lax about using free VPNs until it affected me personally. My credit card details were leaked online, and someone attempted to make purchases on Macy’s website. The sudden surge in online fraud is something we cannot ignore, and free VPNs are among the worst offenders. With free VPNs, you may expose yourself to having a hidden rootkit that is hard to get rid of, and it can put you at risk of a man-in-the-middle attack. They can also steal your login credentials, passwords, credit card information, and even take screenshots of whatever it is you’re doing. The key distinction between a reputable commercial VPN provider and a run-of-the-mill free VPN is its active adherence to a no-logs policy. Notably, there have been significant advancements in this area in recent years. For instance, both ExpressVPN and NordVPN have transitioned to RAM-only servers , which ensure that all user data is wiped out with every reboot. Given that these VPN providers are based in the British Virgin Islands and Panama, outside the Fourteen Eyes jurisdiction, users can enjoy an added sense of assurance. Even when a VPN provider is based in the United States, such as Hotspot Shield, they enforce explicit in-app no-logs policies. On the other hand, a majority of free VPNs do not have privacy policies that can be trusted. Some of them even made it clear that by using them, you allow your user data to be transferred to China or other countries. Since you may not read the small print, you’re not aware of what you’re agreeing to. Even if you’re indifferent about your data being sold to third parties, we cannot ignore the issue of cyber-surveillance. You might think you’re not important enough to be a target of spying, but many ISPs do track online activities. Government agencies, not necessarily from your own country, can monitor Internet traffic for intelligence, even if you’re not a high-profile individual. Many of these free VPNs lack clear privacy policies or measures to protect their users, increasing the likelihood that they could be designed by cyber-surveillance companies. Additionally, due to browser fingerprinting, your browser, device, and surfing habits create a unique identifier, which can trace you even when you delete cookies. This information is definitely valuable to surveillance agents, advertisers, eavesdroppers, and data thieves. Everybody loves free stuff. And when everyone is connected to the same free VPN service, it is inevitable that the speed is affected. Most free VPN services don’t have a lot of resources allocated, and when there are too many users, you will start to experience speed throttle or even a lost connection. Since free VPNs need to get their funds from somewhere, it’s not uncommon for them to sell your bandwidth to third parties. There is no way to know if the person using your bandwidth knows that they are using stolen bandwidth. Also, if the person using it is doing something illegal, (since it’s your bandwidth) you’re the one that’s going to get in trouble with authorities. We’ve discussed the biggest drawbacks of free VPN products, which should make you pause before using them again. The real question isn’t whether a free VPN can be trusted, but whether the VPN you choose offers genuine value. From a user experience point, the annoying advertisements, especially on mobile apps, is one of the worst aspects of using free VPNs. They always affect your Internet speed. In some cases, they have links to malicious sites. Moreover, free VPNs also limit your ability to select the country to connect to. They only have a handful of servers to begin with. If the free VPN also offers a paid service, they will limit you so you will eventually upgrade to the paid service. For example, the free tier of Hotspot Shield offers 500 MB/day respectively. You can barely watch a streaming movie on Netflix. Not all paid VPNs are created equal; some can be just as frustrating as free ones. OTTAWA — Canadian border officials told members of Parliament Thursday that Canada is not a significant source of fentanyl headed into the United States. Aaron McCrorie, vice-president of intelligence and enforcement at the Canada Border Services Agency, made that comment to a parliamentary committee studying the impact of president-elect Donald Trump's plans for border security and migration. CBSA President Erin O'Gorman also said the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has characterized the amount coming from Canada as "slippage" — small amounts sent over for personal use, mostly by post. Trump has threatened 25 per cent tariffs against Canada and Mexico unless the two countries step up on border security to tamp down on flows of illicit fentanyl. During the presidential race, Trump also threatened to deport millions of undocumented people, stirring fears that could trigger an influx of migrants into Canada. Ottawa is compiling new measures to bolster border security through more staff and equipment in the face of Trump's tariff threats. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared his border plan with the premiers during a Wednesday evening meeting, and Ottawa plans to add their suggestions into the soon-to-come package of measures. Several media outlets have reported that the tab for that could surpass $1 billion, citing confidential sources. RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme said he was surprised to see that figure bandied about in headlines, and that he's not clear on whether Ottawa will actually put that much into beefing up the border. He said he plans to use any additional resources coming his way for the RCMP to rely more on modern technology to enforce the Canada-U.S. border. Become a Member I give different answers whenever people ask what my favorite novel is, but Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk’s My Name Is Red (1998) is probably my most frequent reply. The way Pamuk tells what is at the center of its atom a pulpy murder mystery inside the most pointillist, deliciously orbital structure; the way he joyfully insists upon the vital and complex interiority of every character, however peripheral (the dog’s chapters are among my favorite) feels instructive not just creatively, but also ethically. Taking in Pamuk’s 50-year bibliography feels like an extended fulfillment of this life-doubling promise of narrative art — you get to perceive the world robustly from myriad unprecedented subjectivities wholly separate from your own. To behold Memories of Distant Mountains: Illustrated Notebooks, 2009-2022 , Pamuk’s new book of selected journal entries and paintings translated by Ekin Oklap and published by Knopf, is to witness one of the great literary imaginations of the last 50 years at work. It turns out that making a novel is labor and nothing is inevitable — on one page, we see the Nobel Laureate working out plot details about A Strangeness in My Mind (2014) in the margins of a watercolor of his window view. On another, “This coconut green, the garden, the dogs, the yellow sand, the trees ...” The book is a treasure trove of beloved particulars for the Pamuk-obsessed like me, but it’s also an indispensable document for anyone interested in how art gets made, how inspiration has to find the artist working. It was my luck to be able to speak with Pamuk over Zoom on a sunny Iowa morning earlier this month. Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Kaveh Akbar: We are ostensibly met here to talk about your new Memories of Distant Mountains . This is a sort of Blakeian book of your journals over your watercolor paintings; it’s a beautiful, extraordinary art object to hold in your hands. Orhan Pamuk: I have been keeping diaries since the age of 10 in Ankara when my mother gave me as a birthday president a diary in which there was a lock, which told me that there is a habit called “keeping a diary.” I was only 10 years old. And then it is related to secret thoughts because there is a lock on it. I tried to write. It didn’t work, but I had an idea of what a journalist was. I am a, I wouldn’t say manic, but a journal reader, from Virginia Woolf to Tolstoy and Thomas Bond. So many people kept journals, and most of the time they’re edited. And I like these texts, but it’s a practicality. I’ve been keeping these Moleskines. I have 30 of these. So one day I said, “Why don’t I do a book with them?” So I picked up the best, say, 400 double pages with pictures — but all the pages are with pictures — from the notebooks that I’ve been keeping from 2009 to today, while I also had many others without pictures. I then tried to form a book, the logic being that the editing of the book, the sequence of the pages, is not chronological but thematical. The book starts with what I wrote in 2016 about landscape. We turn one page, then it continues to what I wrote about the landscape in 2012, then we turn a page. The book is designed by themes, but not, as in many journals or memoirs, by time. And it took a lot of time to compose and put them together. KA: For readers who haven’t picked up the book yet, could you provide some background? OP: The readers should know perhaps that I am a well-known novelist, but till the age of 22, as I wrote in my autobiographical Istanbul book, I wanted to be a painter. A screw was loose in my mind. I thought I killed the painter in me, but after 10 years, I began to paint more and more. As sometimes I jokingly say, I got out of the closet as a painter in the last 10 years. I even have a museum now. So the suppressed painterly side in me, which I thought was more authentic, more genuine ... because to live between the ages of seven and 22 in a family of engineers, civil engineers, I made them accept that I would go to the Istanbul Technical University, but since I like painting, I would also be an architect. And they all said yes. KA: You talk about killing the painter inside you, but now he’s back. OP: I couldn’t kill the painter in me. In fact, it resurrected. One day I entered a stationery shop, got out two big sets of art materials and notebooks, and from then on I was happily painting. But secretly, not proudly showing, and perhaps knowing that essentially I am a better writer while I can’t help it. KA: That’s my thing! I paint too. OP: Oh really? That’s so nice to hear. KA: I have a painting room, and a nice easel my spouse got me. OP: Wow! You’re like me. What is your hierarchy of writers who paint? KA: William Blake. Number one. OP: He’s the obvious one, because he was successful in an equal measure and he was thinking of the page as both painting and text. KA: That’s the obvious correlative with yours — his illuminations, Paradise Lost , working directly with a text. OP: But for me, I always think that August Strindberg, the Swedish playwright, is the best writer-painter. How do you measure that? John Updike studied painting art in Oxford and was interested in these subjects, but he did not paint himself, or he didn’t get out of the closet as a painter. KA: How about painters who are writers? OP: Yeah. Picasso wanted to be like that. KA: Yeah, of course. I love Paul Klee. OP: Oh, of course! Paul is important because I have an exhibition in Germany in Lenbachhaus where they have the best Paul Klee collections. Another Klee collection is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. KA: And his writing is extraordinary. I love his writing so much. OP: He went to North Africa, to Tunisia, in his 30s. And that also, some critics say, influenced his paintings. KA: It’s fun to think about writers who are secretly great painters, and painters who are secretly great writers. But I mentioned that I paint, too, to say that the reason that I write and don’t paint publicly is because I can write well enough to do it in a public way and can make a living at it. Painting, I am not talented. I just like doing it. OP: Okay, I’m embarrassed. I’m exactly like you, but shameless, perhaps. KA: No! No, I think that what you’ve made here is extraordinary. OP: Thank you. Don’t forget that I also have a museum. That is, I imagined a museum. So that was the first time that the dead painter, or the painter that I tried to kill that is inside me, publicly went out. KA: Of course, because you created the perfect museum for him. OP: Yes. I created a museum related to my novel, The Museum of Innocence . KA: Do you want to talk about the museum for the readers who might not know about it? OP: Perhaps because there is a painter in me who never died, one day I had an idea: “Why don’t I open a museum in which I exhibit objects, but the stories of these objects will be told in an annotated museum catalog in which the annotations are put in such a sequence that it may read like a novel without pictures?” Then, just as I was about to finish the novel, I decided — a conservative decision that I sometimes regret — to make the novel look like a normal 19th-century novel instead of an annotated catalog. KA: But this is one of the great geniuses moments in your work. OP: Oh, if you’re going to continue like that, I will be shy. KA: No, sorry. OP: And then you’ll say, “This guy is a maniac narcissist! He says genius!” KA: No, you don’t have to! I’m saying it. OP: Okay, I like it, continue saying it! KA: So many novels have a linear trajectory through which they move through these terminals of narrative, right? But, in The Museum of Innocence and My Name is Red , you move from a speaker to the dog, you know? It’s this orbital motion where all the propulsion is centripetal. OP: Yes, which comes to my idea that I like writing novels. But what I like more is imagining novels. That is, you’re just asleep, lying on your sofa with your dog, then you’re thinking, “This part will be told by this, then there will be a chapter which no one understands” — or they will understand, of course, when they’re doing a second reading or reading carefully — and then you plan this. Then I switch to this kind of composition of the novel. Before you begin to write, imagining your set composition is even more joyful than executing a novel. You compose, you know what you’re going to do, you’re going to write this, but sometimes you cannot. That’s the bad part. That’s what they call here “writer’s block.” And you imagine there’s no block. The imagination is boundless. A serious writer’s tragedy is his hands, his fingers, his pencils do not obey and listen to what’s in his or her mind. KA: What do you do to clear that synapse? OP: I advise: Just don’t insist too much because it will be frustrating. My advice to writers is, please develop your story a lot before executing to write it. Chapter it, then pile up notes about that chapter. And also don’t listen to the advice of a writer who is 70 years old! KA: That’s always my thing, whenever a student asks me anything, I always say, “I wouldn’t have listened to me.” I would’ve said, “I know what I’m doing. Leave me alone. I have my library to teach me. I don’t need you.” That brings me to the fact that it feels to me like you are in many ways this Borgesian writer for whom the physical book itself is the magic. You know how when you read Nabokov or Borges, you feel their profound affection for the book object itself? OP: For Nabokov, Borges, yes. In fact, in his novel Ada , Nabokov had also alluded to Borges. While, on the other hand, I admire Borges a lot, but he never understood the novels. He once said, “Henry James would have written a long novel about this, but let me tell you this in a short story.” KA: Exactly. He wrote extraordinary poetry, too. OP: Yeah. But on the other hand, he tells this story in three pages. So Henry James is, and is not unnecessarily, 597 pages. It’s just Borges doesn’t have the joy, or he maybe does, but he is a bit cynical. For Borges, a novel is not its story. It’s something else. KA: That’s true. But there’s a way in which he was a vacuum. He was just this voracious mouth that wanted to consume stories — the more efficient, the better, right? There’s this piece from him I love where he’s talking about the Qur’an as the supreme Arab text— OP: “There are no camels, there are no camels.” KA: Right! He says because there are no camels, the Qur’an is supremely Arab. “Mohammed, as an Arab, had no reason to know that camels were particularly Arab.” But in fact, there are camels everywhere in the Qur’an! It’s clear that Borges read two chapters that happened to not mention a camel. And so he says, “I got what I need there.” OP: It’s that he was talking to people who had never read the Qur’an. KA: Of course. So he can say there are no camels in the Qur’an. But I love this because it shows he got the idea and he moved on. OP: But it’s good to illustrate one idea and I like that. KA: Yeah, he kind of channels Schopenhauer to say that, though there are no nightingales in Argentina, Keats heard the nightingale for everyone. I say this to say that the utter joy in wringing out from the universe what would never exist had it not been for your being there in that moment — that is everywhere apparent in the pages of Memories of Distant Mountains . We are experiencing a process of live cognition. It’s like reading Klee’s journals, or Woolf’s, that sense of utter delight. And I don’t mean everything is about pink puppy tails and babies wagging their toes, but that delight in having created where otherwise there would be nothing, something I associate with Borges and Woolf, two of my favorite writers, and I very much associate with you as well. OP: Yes. Thank you so much ... I don’t know what to say! KA: No, I know! I’m sorry, I’m just barking like a happy walrus. So can you talk a little bit about how you curated these pages? OP: First, humanity invented journal keeping, as my mother’s gift to me at the age of 10 suggests, to write secret ideas. You bury your treasure. You write a note. You have some thoughts you want to write down, because they will be unacceptable by society. So you have to have a secret place. And a diary was, has always been, even there was nothing secret there, been a secret place. In the 1930s, French writer André Gide published parts of his diary, and suddenly he legitimized publishing your journal when you’re alive. I am a journal-keeper, and keeping journals is, I would say, easy. I fill a page like this, there are no pictures here in half an hour. And in this half an hour, most of the time, I’m waiting to go out with my wife. She’s late. I’m waiting for a taxi. I have some empty time. There are times I say to myself, “I haven’t written to my journal for five days. Why don’t I sit down and give two hours?” I carry these notebooks in which I draw and write. It feels like carrying my writing desk and my watercolors and painting materials with me. And I’m happy I am doing it. And I’m always saying to my friends, “Why don’t you keep a journal?” I go to my wife, I go to my friends, “You know what we did in three years, two months ago?” And I read it aloud. And, again, it’s partly related to self-importance, partly that this is an original idea that I may never develop. I have an idea. I write that down, that idea. At the beginning when I was keeping these notebooks, it was not for publication, but after a while I realized that I was also addressing some future readers, one day. KA: Of course. And you also now have control over it too, right? As opposed to some posthumous collection coming out. OP: Yes. After I go, they’d immediately publish the pages that I don’t want to be published. KA: Of course. I think about this. I also think about my generation for whom all of this is digital now. And no one is going to want to read our emails. OP: Why? There may be some people who are interested. We may be writing some of our best lines in an email. Italo Calvino called himself a graphomaniac. A graphomaniac is someone who is obsessively writing. And he never went down in his quality, the cloth was Calvino cloth, of course. KA: I associate that with Dickinson too, right? Where there’s the seamlessness between her letters and her poetry. OP: You produce that cloth all the time, but sometimes then the story, the composition, the total meaning is not clear. Diary or publication of diaries is about honoring these little fragments of pages that you understand will not form a whole by itself. And I decided that I would publish some of it, hoping that some people would be interested — some people like you would be interested. KA: So many of the paintings that we see in these pages are landscapes of sorts of the view out a window, or the city view. You write in the book about how painting starts with visualizing what you can’t remember, and so, functionally, what is being painted is time , instead of a landscape. OP: Yes. Let me clarify. If you paint the same landscape all the time — which I do from here, from my New York or Istanbul window, looking at Hudson or Bosphorus, or the landscape of your table — then you begin to write about, in a way, time. KA: Can you share a little bit about this experience? When we see Istanbul in your novels, we see it across time. We see you experiencing it as a young man and then as an older man. One of the things that I think about in relation to your work, and to being an Iranian writer situated in America, is that if I was in Iran today and I was writing the exact same stuff that I was writing, but in Farsi, I would feel excluded from a global conversation of letters. Whereas being an Iranian in America allows me to participate. OP: Good question. I think I am extremely lucky because after the age of 40, my books began to get translated into English, and they were relatively successful. Better publishers always wanted my work. I had a father who wanted to be a poet like you, who failed and ended up a businessman, who respected my decision to be a writer. When I was 24, he would say, “Well, it’s easy being a famous writer in Turkey. What about international, global recognition?” My father would challenge me with words like that. Unfortunately, he didn’t see my Nobel Prize! Either way, I would be so happy if he had seen it. But he would also say that I would get it before anyone else. I had a father like that, and he had a big library. I owe him a lot. I owe a lot to my mother, too. When they divorced, my mother raised us. KA: You write about this beautifully. What’s the difference between being a famous writer in Turkey and being an internationally famous Turkish writer with a Nobel Prize? OP: I’ll give you an example: What I write about should have global resonance. I have self-consciously thought about this, especially when I was writing A Strangeness In My Mind , which was about the making of a shantytown in Istanbul. At that time, I was, relatively speaking, famous and successful. So I went to Brazil and saw favelas of Rio de Janeiro. I went to Bombay and saw Dharavi, which is also a favela and a business place. And I researched and researched about Turkey’s shantytowns, which were relatively better, I would say, whatever “better” means, more comfortable. I said to myself that when I’m picking up details of Turkish shantytowns, I will also consider what is more — “universal” is a kitschy word — but what are the general problems? At that time when I was writing A Strangeness in My Mind , around 2012 to 2016, I was already thinking of my novel as a global novel, but not when I was young. When I was writing my Black Book or early novels, I was only addressing Turkish leadership. But the fire that my father put in me that I had to be internationally successful was there all the time. KA: And it’s cool to see the names of characters from A Strangeness in My Mind in your notes. We see you contemplating its main characters, Mevlut and Rayiha, presumably as you write them. OP: Yes. These are the parts of [ Memories of Distant Mountains ] that I really care about. The whole effort of a fiction writer, especially when writing a long novel like me, is forcing yourself to identify with your characters like a really naive person. They make fun. I have to be Mevlut. I have to be one of my characters. I have to see the world and the beauty — or not the beauty, but convincing power — the beauty of the sentence is something else — but the convincing truth. The authenticity of the subject matter really depends on the writer’s identification with the character. You write about places that you don’t belong to by culture and class, or by geography, or even sometimes by language. It gets harder and harder if there are these distances. While on the other hand, we don’t want to read about the middle-class writer’s personal life all the time. In fact, the joy of being a writer is, I am not this person . I’m not Mevlut. I’m a middle-class writer, but I’m doing so much to identify with him. First, I will respect this person as a humanist. Second is my capacity to see the world through my character’s point of view. Be that person. These are the most attractive, interesting, playful sides of being a novelist. Not only do you have to identify with the character so that you will think what he or she will do next, but you also — this is another part we may talk about — you also have to write it beautifully. KA: Of course. No one wants to just be hit on the head with a cudgel of narrative, right? You have to earn the reader’s attention. Horace says that language should delight and instruct. And we are in a time when many of the sociopolitical circumstances of our reality feel very dire and urgent. In America, I don’t know if this is the same in Turkish literature, but it feels like lots of writing is really galloping headfirst into instruction and perhaps neglecting the delight a little bit. OP: You think so? This is what they used to say about left-wing writing in Turkey in the 1970s: “You are always very pedagogical or propaganda. What about beauty?” In the non-Western world they expect you to be more didactic, educational, useful. Especially in my early time, I was always criticized for not being political enough. I was considered in the first two decades of my writing in Turkey a bourgeois writer, while other writers, more political, more leftist, more radical, consider themselves doing an ethical job. While I’m trying to defend the autonomy, the beauty of the sentences. It was very hard. KA: Snow becomes the riposte to those criticisms of you because it is more overtly — I don’t think that there’s such a thing as apolitical language — but it is more explicitly political in its narrative. But I also think it’s interesting because you talk about visiting the favelas and visiting Bombay, but when you talk about writing Snow ... it’s almost like in writing those characters, you are writing on the cusp of between provinciality and modernity. OP: Provinciality is a great subject of mine, and it’s deeply related to the fact that there was an Ottoman Empire which dissolved very fast on the edge of Europe. So Europe is very close, but as a Turk you’re also living a very poor life, you’re not important. You don’t have any power over history. Who cares about you? These are questions that you also ask. And you’re now talking about a global readership: Oh, I’m so lucky. I have to thank God many times. Yes, I have that privilege. But only 1% of the world is global, the rest is provincial and feels deeply so. Then you realize provinciality is also a great subject that addresses the hearts of the people. It’s also a very taboo subject. The provincial will never say, “I’m provincial.” KA: Exactly. OP: “I’m like you! My heart is like yours!” That is the most they can say: “I’m like you.” KA: It’s the cumulative exhausting effect of having to insist all the time, “We’re just like you. I’m just like you. I’m just like you.” It’s in contemporary Persian literature. Or right now you see all of these voices from Palestine saying, “We love our children just like you. That’s how we love our children. And look what you’re doing to them!” OP: Which they’re saying, unfortunately, so that they’re killed less. KA: Of course, because you have to impress that upon empire. Empire doesn’t understand. The interiority of someone that you can’t imagine is an interiority that you treat brusquely. You treat the security of that person with ambivalence. Which is why it is excruciating to have to continually say, “You know how you love your children? That’s how we love our children. You know how you love your husband? That’s how we fell in love.” So much of the world lives in this provinciality, illegible to empire. We hope you enjoyed this article! Mark Young, Woolery's podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. Woolery, with his matinee idol looks, coiffed hair and ease with witty banter, was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007 and earned a daytime Emmy nomination in 1978. In 1983, Woolery began an 11-year run as host of TV’s “Love Connection,” for which he coined the phrase, “We’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds,” a two-fingered signature dubbed the “2 and 2.” In 1984, he hosted TV’s “Scrabble,” simultaneously hosting two game shows on TV until 1990. “Love Connection,” which aired long before the dawn of dating apps, had a premise that featured either a single man or single woman who would watch audition tapes of three potential mates and then pick one for a date. A couple of weeks after the date, the guest would sit with Woolery in front of a studio audience and tell everybody about the date. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. Woolery told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2003 that his favorite set of lovebirds was a man aged 91 and a woman aged 87. "She had so much eye makeup on, she looked like a stolen Corvette. He was so old he said, ‘I remember wagon trains.’ The poor guy. She took him on a balloon ride.” Other career highlights included hosting the shows “Lingo," “Greed” and “The Chuck Woolery Show,” as well as hosting the short-lived syndicated revival of “The Dating Game” from 1998 to 2000 and an ill-fated 1991 talk show. In 1992, he played himself in two episodes of TV’s “Melrose Place.” Woolery became the subject of the Game Show Network’s first attempt at a reality show, “Chuck Woolery: Naturally Stoned,” which premiered in 2003. It shared the title of the pop song in 1968 by Woolery and his rock group, the Avant-Garde. It lasted six episode and was panned by critics. Woolery began his TV career at a show that has become a mainstay. Although most associated with Pat Sajak and Vanna White, “Wheel of Fortune” debuted Jan. 6, 1975, on NBC with Woolery welcoming contestants and the audience. Woolery, then 33, was trying to make it in Nashville as a singer. “Wheel of Fortune” started life as “Shopper’s Bazaar,” incorporating Hangman-style puzzles and a roulette wheel. After Woolery appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show” singing “Delta Dawn,” Merv Griffin asked him to host the new show with Susan Stafford. “I had an interview that stretched to 15, 20 minutes,” Woolery told The New York Times in 2003. “After the show, when Merv asked if I wanted to do a game show, I thought, ‘Great, a guy with a bad jacket and an equally bad mustache who doesn’t care what you have to say — that’s the guy I want to be.’” NBC initially passed, but they retooled it as “Wheel of Fortune” and got the green light. After a few years, Woolery demanded a raise to $500,000 a year, or what host Peter Marshall was making on “Hollywood Squares.” Griffin balked and replaced Woolery with weather reporter Pat Sajak. “Both Chuck and Susie did a fine job, and ‘Wheel’ did well enough on NBC, although it never approached the kind of ratings success that ‘Jeopardy!’ achieved in its heyday,” Griffin said in “Merv: Making the Good Life Last,” an autobiography from the 2000s co-written by David Bender. Woolery earned an Emmy nod as host. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Woolery served in the U.S. Navy before attending college. He played double bass in a folk trio, then formed the psychedelic rock duo The Avant-Garde in 1967 while working as a truck driver to support himself as a musician. The Avant-Garde, which toured in a refitted Cadillac hearse, had the Top 40 hit “Naturally Stoned,” with Woolery singing, “When I put my mind on you alone/I can get a good sensation/Feel like I’m naturally stoned.” After The Avant-Garde broke up, Woolery released his debut solo single “I’ve Been Wrong” in 1969 and several more singles with Columbia before transitioning to country music by the 1970s. He released two solo singles, “Forgive My Heart” and “Love Me, Love Me.” Woolery wrote or co-wrote songs for himself and everyone from Pat Boone to Tammy Wynette. On Wynette’s 1971 album “We Sure Can Love Each Other,” Woolery wrote “The Joys of Being a Woman” with lyrics including “See our baby on the swing/Hear her laugh, hear her scream.” After his TV career ended, Woolery went into podcasting. In an interview with The New York Times, he called himself a gun-rights activist and described himself as a conservative libertarian and constitutionalist. He said he hadn’t revealed his politics in liberal Hollywood for fear of retribution. He teamed up with Mark Young in 2014 for the podcast “Blunt Force Truth” and soon became a full supporter of Donald Trump while arguing minorities don’t need civil rights and causing a firestorm by tweeting an antisemitic comment linking Soviet Communists to Judaism. “President Obama’s popularity is a fantasy only held by him and his dwindling legion of juice-box-drinking, anxiety-dog-hugging, safe-space-hiding snowflakes,” he said. Woolery also was active online, retweeting articles from Conservative Brief, insisting Democrats were trying to install a system of Marxism and spreading headlines such as “Impeach him! Devastating photo of Joe Biden leaks.” During the early stages of the pandemic, Woolery initially accused medical professionals and Democrats of lying about the virus in an effort to hurt the economy and Trump’s chances for reelection to the presidency. “The most outrageous lies are the ones about COVID-19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, media, Democrats, our doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it,” Woolery wrote in July 2020. Trump retweeted that post to his 83 million followers. By the end of the month, nearly 4.5 million Americans had been infected with COVID-19 and more than 150,000 had died. Just days later, Woolery changed his stance, announcing his son had contracted COVID-19. “To further clarify and add perspective, COVID-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones,” Woolery posted before his account was deleted. Woolery later explained on his podcast that he never called COVID-19 “a hoax” or said “it’s not real,” just that “we’ve been lied to.” Woolery also said it was “an honor to have your president retweet what your thoughts are and think it’s important enough to do that.” In addition to his wife, Woolery is survived by his sons Michael and Sean and his daughter Melissa, Young said.

Nagpur: Maharashtra Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced on Wednesday that the pending elections to local bodies in the state will take place in March-April 2025, provided the Supreme Court delivers its decision on OBC reservation in the first week of January. Speaking at a press conference, he mentioned that the hearing on the quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) is scheduled for the first week of January. "The State Election Commission will conduct the polls and the state government will provide all the support," the Revenue Minister said. The five-year term of most of the municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and other local bodies in the state expired in 2022. In December 2021, the Supreme Court had ruled that reservation for OBCs in local bodies will not be allowed unless the government fulfils the triple test laid down in the apex court's 2010 order. It had ruled that until the triple test criteria is fulfilled, the OBC seats will be re-notified as general category seats. The triple test required the state government to set up a dedicated commission to gather data on the backwardness of OBCs in every local body, to specify the proportion of reservation in each local body in light of commission’s recommendations, and ensure that such reservation does not exceed 50 per cent of the total seats reserved for SC/ST/OBC together. Bawankule further said there were complaints that several properties owned by private charitable trusts and educational institutions were forcibly taken over by the Waqf Board in Maharashtra. "Once the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is cleared by Parliament, it will be implemented in Maharashtra. If there are any wrongdoings, they will be rectified," he said. The Maharashtra BJP chief said that under the Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA), the process to conduct a drone survey of villages began in 2021 to provide e-property cards to farmers for ownership of their land in rural areas. OTTAWA - The RCMP plans to create a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of Canada’s border using helicopters, drones and surveillance towers. The move is part of the federal government’s $1.3-billion upgrade to border security and monitoring to appease U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s concerns about the flow of migrants and illegal drugs. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian and Mexican exports to the U.S. as soon as he is inaugurated next month unless both countries move to improve border security. Canada will also propose to the United States the creation of a North American “joint strike force” to target organized crime groups that work across borders. In addition, the government intends to provide new technology, tools and resources to the Canada Border Services Agency to seek out deadly fentanyl using chemical detection, artificial intelligence and canine teams. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told a news conference Tuesday he has discussed parts of the plan with American officials and that he is optimistic about its reception. “We have a lot of work ahead of us,” said LeBlanc, who tried to play down the notion Canada was simply bowing to American demands. “The fight against fentanyl is very much a fight that Canadians want to have because of its impact in Canada,” he said. “Deepening, strengthening, being more visible in the posture at the border is something that we’re happy to do with our American partners.” The announcement followed a promise in the fall economic statement Monday to earmark the money over six fiscal years for the RCMP, the border agency, Public Safety Canada and the cyberspies at the Communications Security Establishment. Among the other planned measures: — a Canadian Drug Profiling Centre to complement existing laboratory capacity by allowing for more specialized analysis of synthetic drug samples, helping determine where substances were made; — a Precursor Risk Management Unit to increase oversight over chemicals used to make drugs and monitor emerging illegal drug trends; — an obligation for port owners and operators to provide the border agency with the space and facilities needed to conduct export inspections, just as they currently do for imports; — stronger efforts against money laundering to help starve organized crime groups of profits from human smuggling and drug and firearms trafficking; — and new restrictions on countries that do not rapidly facilitate the return of their citizens in the event of fraudulent entry or a removal order. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, who also attended the news conference, said the goal “for us is get the technology out there as soon as we can.” “I can’t just buy a helicopter tomorrow, but there are processes where you can rent the helicopter, and we’re exploring every facet.” Duheme said an aim of the joint strike force would be develop specialists on fentanyl, bringing together law enforcement partners both in Canada and abroad. The union representing rank-and-file Mounties welcomed the move to spend more on border security. National Police Federation president Brian Sauvé said in a statement Monday that members had been protecting the border with limited resources, and the new money will allow them to continue delivering on their mandate. Aaron McCrorie, the border services agency’s vice-president of intelligence and enforcement, said in a recent interview that irregular migration and smuggling of drugs such as fentanyl are common concerns for Canada and the United States. “These aren’t concerns that are unique to the United States. RCMP union applauds planned federal spending on border securityIf President-elect Donald Trump makes good on his threat to kill federal tax credits for electric vehicle purchases, it's likely that fewer buyers will choose EVs. Yet tax credits or not, auto companies show no intention of retreating from a steady transition away from gas-burning cars and trucks, especially given the enormous investment they have already made: Since 2021, the industry has spent at least $160 billion on planning, designing and building electric vehicles, according to the Center for Auto Research. In campaigning for the presidency, Trump condemned the federal tax for EV buyers — up to $7,500 per vehicle — as part of a “green new scam” that would devastate the auto industry. His transition team is reportedly working on plans to abolish the tax credits and to roll back the more stringent fuel-economy rules that were pushed through by the Biden administration. It is far from clear, though, that the Trump administration could actually rescind the credits. Trump's argument — one that most economists dispute — is that a rapid U.S. shift toward electric vehicles would lead to most EVs being made in China and would swell prices for America’s auto buyers. He has said he would redirect federal revenue recaptured from a canceled tax credit to build roads, bridges and dams. Ending the credits, which were a key provision of President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, almost certainly would reduce EV sales, which have been growing in the United States this year, though not nearly as fast as automakers had expected. The slowing growth has forced nearly all auto companies to scale back EV production and delay construction of battery factories that are no longer needed to handle a more gradual transition. Jonathan Chariff, an executive at Midway Ford in Miami, one of the company's top EV-selling dealers, said he thinks ending the tax credits would severely hurt sales. The credits reduce monthly payments, he noted, making an EV closer in price to a gasoline counterpart. “It becomes more affordable,” he said. “Otherwise, those individuals won't be able to afford the payments.” Chariff calculated that the $7,500 credit could shrink a buyer's monthly payment by between $200 and $250, allowing many to afford an EV. On average, electric vehicles sell for about $57,000, compared with around $48,000 for a gasoline vehicle, according to Cox Automotive. (Though they cost more up front, EVs generally are cheaper to operate because maintenance costs are lower, and in most cases electricity is much cheaper than gasoline.) To qualify for the credits, EVs must be built in North America. EVs that contain battery parts or minerals from China or any other nation that is deemed an economic or security threat to the United States qualify for only half the federal credit. Because of that restriction, most of the 75 EV models on sale in the U.S. are not eligible for the full credit. All EVs, though, can receive the full credit toward a lease — a benefit that Trump likely will target. Some plug-in gas-electric hybrids qualify for the credits, too. Asked about the president-elect's opposition to EV tax credits, Trump's transition team would say only that he has “a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail.” Elon Musk, a close adviser to Trump and co-leader of a commission that intends to identify ways to vastly shrink the federal government, appears to be aligned with the president-elect in canceling the tax credits. Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla who spent an estimated $200 million to help elect Trump, has said that ending the credits would hurt his rival companies more than it would Tesla, the U.S. sales leader in EVs by far. “I think it would be devastating for our competitors and would hurt Tesla slightly,” he said. Even so, it might prove difficult for Trump to rescind the credits without help from the new Republican-led Congress, many of whose members represent districts where the EV credit is popular. Trump has floated the idea of using a constitutional theory by which a president could decide whether or not to spend money Congress has appropriated. The president-elect has promoted the concept of “impoundment,” under which congressional appropriations set a ceiling — but not a floor — for spending federal money. John Helveston, an assistant professor at George Washington University who studies electric vehicles and policies, said that in his view, the impoundment theory wouldn't apply in this circumstance because the EV tax credits affect government revenue and are not an appropriation. In any case, Helveston said he doubts Trump could persuade Republican lawmakers to remove the credits from the Inflation Reduction Act because so many congressional districts benefit from the tax breaks. “Cutting the EV tax credit makes it harder for the battery factory in their town to sell their product,” he noted. A 1974 federal law bars a president from substituting his own view of spending programs, said David Rapallo, associate law professor at Georgetown University. If Trump cancelled the tax credits, Rapallo said, it would be challenged in court. Research by J.D. Power shows that once people know about the tax credits, they're far more likely to consider an electric vehicle. In the meantime, federal subsides, not only for buyer tax credits but also for converting factories to EV production, are helping General Motors, Ford and Stellantis make the enormously expensive transition away from gasoline vehicles. It's also helping Detroit's Big Three compete with foreign rivals, notably Chinese automakers that received government subsidies and had a head start in developing EVs, said Sam Fiorani, a vice president at the consultancy AutoForecast Solutions. At present, Ford and GM, while profitable overall, are losing money on EVs, unlike Tesla, though both expect their electric-vehicle operations to generate positive earnings in the coming years as costs ease and more vehicles are sold. Eliminating the federal tax credits, Fiorani suggested, would “hurt the Detroit Three in the long run as they become less competitive against global players making the technological leaps” for electric vehicles, GM, Ford and Stellantis all declined to comment, though their executives have said in the past that they will continue to develop EVs while still selling gasoline vehicles and hybrids. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group that represents most automakers, has written to Trump in support of the tax credits, arguing that they help ensure that the U.S. “continues to lead in manufacturing critical to our national and economic security.” Hyundai, the Korean automaker, which has spent more than $7 billion on an EV factory in Georgia, could also suffer. The company sped up construction of the huge plant near Savannah and is now building EVs in the United States to try to capitalize on the tax credits for buyers. In the end, most automakers say their ambitious plans for transitioning to electric vehicles won't change regardless of policy changes in Washington. “We plan for the long term, so political considerations aren’t a factor in how we approach product development or capital investments,” said David Christ, vice president of Toyota North America, which is building a battery factory in North Carolina. Georgetown’s then-president, for example, listed a prospective student on his “president’s list” after meeting her and her wealthy father at an Idaho conference known as “summer camp for billionaires,” according to Tuesday court filings in the price-fixing lawsuit filed in Chicago federal court in 2022. Since the lawsuit was filed, 10 of the schools have reached settlements to pay out a total of $284 million, including payments of up to $2,000 to current or former students whose financial aid might have been shortchanged over a period of more than two decades. They are Brown, the University of Chicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory, Northwestern, Rice, Vanderbilt and Yale. Johns Hopkins is working on a settlement and the six schools still fighting the lawsuit are the California Institute of Technology, Cornell, Georgetown, MIT, Notre Dame and the University of Pennsylvania. MIT called the lawsuit and the claims about admissions favoritism baseless. “MIT has no history of wealth favoritism in its admissions; quite the opposite,” university spokesperson Kimberly Allen said. “After years of discovery in which millions of documents were produced that provide an overwhelming record of independence in our admissions process, plaintiffs could cite just a single instance in which the recommendation of a board member helped sway the decisions for two undergraduate applicants." PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Malaysia’s first solid-state hydrogen reactor for sustainable electricity generation in rural areas will be launched in the first quarter of 2025, says the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry (Mosti). Minister Chang Lih Kang said the 5-kilowatt reactor will be deployed in Tanjung Malim, Perak. “The pilot project is the third initiative using solid-state hydrogen to generate electricity in remote locations, particularly where there is no existing power supply,” he said. Special counsel Jack Smith’s move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump’s political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump’s presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has set its sights on resolving one of Tirumala's pressing challenges—decades-old legacy waste. Legacy waste means municipal solid waste piled up for years in landfills, dumpsites or on barren land. These comprise biodegradable waste, plastic, clothes, metals, glass etc. With over 60,000 metric tonnes of untreated waste and daily additions compounding the issue, TTD is currently adopting a multi-pronged strategy aimed at sustainable waste management. "Our focus is not just on clearing the legacy waste but also on building a system that ensures efficient and eco-friendly waste management in the future. We are committed to transforming waste into resources and minimising its environmental impact", TTD executive officer Syamala Rao told Deccan Chronicle. According to the EO, approximately 2.45 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste has accumulated over the years. While 1.85 lakh metric tonnes has already been treated and disposed of, the remaining 60,000 metric tonnes present significant logistical and environmental hurdles. Additionally, the treatment process has yielded by-products, including 34,000 metric tonnes of treated soil, 15,000 metric tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and 10,000 metric tonnes of stones, all requiring repurposing strategies. Daily waste generation further intensifies the issue, with 60-70 metric tonnes of dry and wet waste being produced. This calls for immediate and long-term measures, explained the EO. To overcome these, TTD is implementing a blend of technology and expertise. "We are engaging consultants to devise a comprehensive plan for efficient waste management. Within a week, tenders will be called to appoint experts to provide innovative solutions," the EO announced. The TTD has begun incorporating insights from a study conducted three months ago by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS). Also, a consultant from the GVMC will assess Tirumala’s drainage and storm-water systems to suggest improvements, Rao said. A dedicated drainage division is in the works to address infrastructure challenges. "We are exploring advanced equipment and recycling systems to reduce dependency on freshwater resources. Separating underground drainage from storm-water systems is a priority to ensure efficient waste treatment," the EO explained. The TTD is also focusing on repurposing by-products from waste treatment to ensure sustainable utilisation. Treated soil is earmarked for landfilling, pending compliance with safety standards, while stones and RDF are being evaluated for innovative repurposing methods.
